DARKNESS FALLS

"But words came slowly one by one,
From frozen lips shut still and dumb."
- Elizabeth Siddal,

As a storyteller, darkness has always intrigued me. I've never really been interested in happy endings where the princess gets the prince, I like to work harder than that. Darkness and death in photography always fascinates me; taking the darkest moments and turning them into something beautiful and thought provoking.

I remember back into my photography research, looking at the life and death of Francesca Woodman, a talented, young American photographer who committed suicide in 1981. Looking through Woodman's portfolio, one can see that death was a feature, if not an inspiration to a lot of her work; images of committing suicide were frequent. Woodman depicted a ghostly image using movement and shadows; long exposures and black and white format gave her images an eerie sadness. There was something almost dream like to her images.

As a fellow storyteller through photography, this image series was inspired by Woodman's dream like feel. I love the idea of working with dreams and reinterpreting them into photography; making an image which passes like a flash of the story, with holes in it which need to be filled by the viewers own interpretation. Dreams offer an endless possibility of stories and endings, they expand the limitations and offer no boundaries to what is possible.

A favourite past time of mine, is looking through old letters from pre-raphaelite artists. These real life glimpses into the past lives, loves and heartbreaks of artists and their families offer me an endless inspiration which I hope will guide my project in the future.
